The GATE selection procedure
- For M.Tech/Ph.D. Admissions in Institutes (IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc.):
- Qualifying the GATE Exam: Achieving a valid GATE score is the first requirement. Each institute will have its own qualifying GATE score or cutoff for different programs and categories.
- Application to Individual Institutes: You need to apply separately to each institute and program you are interested in. These applications usually open after the GATE results are announced.
- Shortlisting Based on GATE Score: Institutes will shortlist candidates based on their GATE score and sometimes other criteria like academic performance in their bachelor’s degree.
- Counselling Process:
- COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal): For IITs, a common platform called COAP is used. You register on COAP and can view and accept/reject offers from participating IITs. There are multiple rounds of offers.
- CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan): For NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs, admissions are primarily done through CCMT. Similar to COAP, you register, fill in your choices, and seat allotments are done in rounds based on your GATE score and preferences.
- Individual Institute Counselling: Some institutes might conduct their own separate counselling rounds in addition to or instead of COAP/CCMT.
