In a ceremony on Thursday afternoon, a statue paying tribute to the iconic Lakers figure Kobe Bryant was revealed at Star Plaza, located outside the Crypto.com Arena.
The Lakers emphasized that the statue is designed to stand as an enduring commemoration of Kobe’s exceptional Lakers legacy, providing fans worldwide with a dedicated space to pay their respects and reminisce about his extraordinary basketball odyssey.

The bronze statue, featuring Bryant pointing towards the sky, was revealed before the Lakers’ match against the Denver Nuggets at 3:30 p.m.
Vanessa Bryant, his widow, mentioned that it will be one of three statues in an installation known as “The House that Kobe Built.”
In the Thursday night game, the Lakers will don the team’s Kobe-inspired “Black Mamba” jerseys, originally revealed in the 2017-18 season. Bryant, renowned as the “Black Mamba” throughout his illustrious 20-year NBA career, tragically passed away on January 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

The plans for the statue were disclosed last year on “Mamba Day,” an annual celebration held every August 24, paying homage to the two uniform numbers he wore during his career, which were 8 and 24.

“Since coming to this city and becoming part of the Lakers family, Kobe found a true home here, gracing the City of Angels with his presence. On behalf of the Lakers, my daughters, and myself, I feel deeply honored that in the heart of Los Angeles, right in front of the iconic venue known as the house that Kobe built, we will reveal his statue, ensuring that his enduring legacy is celebrated for all time,” expressed Vanessa Bryant in a video shared on social media announcing the statue.
The Lakers retired both of Kobe Bryant’s jersey numbers in 2017, a unique honor bestowed upon him the year following his retirement, marking him as the first NBA player to have two numbers retired by a single team. He sported No. 8 from 1996 to 2006 and later transitioned to No. 24 for the remainder of his illustrious career.
Throughout his entire NBA journey exclusively with the Lakers, Bryant established himself as the franchise’s all-time leader in various categories, including games played (1,346), minutes on the court (48,637), field goals (11,719), and 3-point goals (1,827), among numerous team records. Notably, he holds the Lakers’ top spot in career points with an impressive 33,643.
While Kareem Abdul-Jabbar finished his 20-year career with a then-NBA-record 38,387 points, LeBron James surpassed Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time mark the previous year. Other Lakers legends, such as Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, and announcer Chick Hearn, have also been honored with statues outside the arena.
