This celebration occurs on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, which in the Gregorian calendar normally occurs between October and November.
Sisters, on this day, pray for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their beloved brothers. On this special day, they draw a tilak, or vermilion mark, on their brothers’ foreheads and perform an aarti using a vibrant thali filled with candies, roli, and coconuts. Siblings share gifts as expressions of love and feast on delicious treats.
The most well-known myth surrounding Bhai Dooj centers on the god Yama, also known as the Lord of Death, and his sister Yamuna. The myth goes that on the day of Dwitiya in the Kartik month (October to November), Yama paid a visit to his sister Yamuna. Joyous at her brother’s arrival, Yamuna blessed Yama with an aarti and put a tilak on his forehead.
Yama, moved by her love and devotion, bestowed upon her a boon: on this day, everyone who receives a tilak and aarti from their sister will not have to endure the agony of hellfire. This legend represents the importance of Bhai Dooj in shielding brothers from misfortune and the close relationship that exists between siblings.
