Family and Marriage
Maharana Pratap married 11 women, of whom the most famous and admired is Maharani Ajabde Punwar. She was with him in all his struggles and stood for his cause. They had a son named Amar Singh I, who succeeded him later as the king of Mewar.
A King Who Refused to Bow
Following the demise of Udai Singh II, there was a battle for the throne. Under political pressure, he became the 13th ruler of Mewar after ascending to the throne. His reign was characterized by persistent resistance against the Mughal Empire, particularly Emperor Akbar, who attempted several times to subjugate Mewar.
But unlike most other Rajput kings, he never surrendered to Mughal authority. He preferred to battle than to yield, even when his kingdom was being severely depleted. His most celebrated battle, the Battle of Haldighati in 1576, is a beacon of Rajput bravery. Although outnumbered and ultimately compelled to withdraw, Maharana Pratap’s spirit was unconquered.
